こんにちは、カルテック日本人会会長の上月彩夏です。

カルテックに所属する皆さん同士の交流を深め、互いに刺激を受け合える環境を作るため、さまざまなイベントも企画中です。学内外でのネットワーキングや楽しいアクティビティを通じ、新たな出会いや経験をぜひお楽しみください。

カリフォルニア工科大学とは

カリフォルニア工科大学（通称：Caltech）は、アメリカの西海岸・ロサンゼルスの近くにある私立大学です。大学の世界ランキングでは、毎年1~5位にランクインする名門大学で、科学・工学分野で世界に大きな影響を与える研究を多数行っています。規模はとても小さく、学生数は東大やハーバード大の10分の1以下、MITの5分の1以下ですが、これまでに日本全体よりも多い38人（39回）ものノーベル賞受賞者を輩出しています（2020年現在）。現役教授にも、ノーベル賞受賞者やアメリカ国家科学賞受賞者、全米アカデミーズ会員などが多数在籍しており、カルテックでは、このような著名な教授の授業や研究指導を受けることができます。

キャンパスは小さく、端から端まで5-10分で歩けるくらいです。キャンパスの至るところに、科学にちなんだ装飾があるのが特徴的で、噴水や建物の柵、地面などを注意して見ると見つかります。もしCaltechに来られる機会があれば探してみてください。

アインシュタインも、Caltechに3学期間ほど訪問研究員として滞在していました。アインシュタインが滞在していた部屋は、現在はホテルの一室（Einstein Suite）として利用されており、ゲストの滞在が可能となっています。

カリフォルニア工科大学の日本人

Caltechには、毎年0~3人程度の日本人大学院生が入学します。学部生は、ここ数年は日本からの入学者はいません。大学院（PhD）課程は5~6年が平均なので、大学全体では10人程度の日本人学生が常時在籍しています。卒業後の進路は多岐に渡り、アメリカの大企業に就職したり、ポスドク後にアメリカで教授職を得たり、日本で教授職・企業の研究職に就いたりなど様々なケースがあります。

正規課程の学生以外にも、短期留学の学生、ポスドク、企業派遣などでCaltechに来ている日本人も多くいます。また、物理学科・生物学科などには、数人の日本人教授も在籍しています。

大学周辺の生活環境

大学のキャンパスは、ロサンゼルスのダウンタウンから車で約20-30分のパサデナ（Pasadena）という市にあります。周囲に高級住宅街があるため治安が良く、スーパーやレストランも徒歩圏内にあるので、日常生活には事欠きません。車で10~15分のところにMitsuwaやH-Martといったアジア系スーパーもあり、日本の食材を調達することもできます。

パサデナには、NASAの研究所（Caltechの研究機関）であるジェット推進研究所（JPL）や、全米大学のアメフトが行われることで有名なローズボウル、他にもハンティントン・ライブラリー、ノートン・サイモン美術館など、様々な名所があります。毎年元旦には、ローズパレードという大きなパレードも行われており、何十万人もの人々が観覧に訪れます。

About the California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology (commonly known as Caltech) is a private university located near Los Angeles on the West Coast of the United States. It consistently ranks among the top 1–5 universities in the world and is renowned for its groundbreaking research in science and engineering, which has had a significant global impact. Although its scale is very small—with its student body being less than one-tenth the size of that at the University of Tokyo or Harvard and less than one-fifth that of MIT—it has produced an impressive 38 Nobel laureates (across 39 awards), a number that surpasses that of all of Japan (as of 2020). The campus is compact enough to walk from one end to the other in just 5–10 minutes. Notable Figures Associated with Caltech

• Robert Millikan: One of Caltech's founders, well known for the "Millikan oil drop experiment" featured in high school textbooks. (He supported eugenics, simply a bad guy.)
• Linus Pauling: In addition to his research on chemical bonding, he made broad contributions to physics, biology, and medicine, and is a recipient of both the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Peace Prize.
• Richard Feynman: Widely recognized as one of the most famous scientists of the 20th century, he made significant contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics and is the originator of "Feynman diagrams."
• Murray Gell-Mann: The proponent of "quarks," the fundamental particles that constitute atoms.
• Gordon Moore: The founder of Intel, a leading semiconductor manufacturer.

Albert Einstein also spent roughly three academic terms at Caltech as a visiting researcher. The room in which Einstein stayed is now used as a hotel suite (the Einstein Suite), available for guests.

Japanese Students at Caltech
Each year, approximately 0–3 Japanese graduate students gain admission to Caltech. In recent years, there have been no undergraduate admissions from Japan. Since the average duration of the PhD program is about 5–6 years, there are roughly 10 Japanese students enrolled at any given time. Their career paths after graduation are diverse: some join major American corporations, others secure faculty positions in the United States after postdoctoral work, while many become professors or researchers in Japan.
In addition to full-time students, many Japanese individuals come to Caltech as short-term exchange students, postdoctoral researchers, or through corporate dispatch programs. Several Japanese professors are also part of the faculty in departments such as Physics and Biology.

Living Environment Around the University
The campus is situated in Pasadena, a city about a 20–30 minute drive from downtown Los Angeles. Owing to the surrounding upscale residential neighborhoods, Pasadena is very safe, and daily necessities are easily met with supermarkets and restaurants within walking distance. Moreover, Asian supermarkets such as Mitsuwa and H-Mart are located within a 10–15 minute drive, making it convenient to purchase Japanese ingredients.
Pasadena is home to various notable attractions, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech's affiliated NASA research facility), the iconic Rose Bowl known for college football, the Huntington Library, and the Norton Simon Museum. Additionally, the city hosts the annual Rose Parade on New Year's Day, which draws hundreds of thousands of spectators.
